Position Context

This position is open as part of the creation of a center of expertise to support railway projects with VIA Rail and TTC. The Mechanical Lead Engineer will join a multidisciplinary project team of approximately 15 members and play a key role throughout the full project lifecycle, from design to installation and commissioning.

Role Overview

The Mechanical Lead Engineer (MLE) is responsible for leading, coordinating, and delivering mechanical engineering activities within railway projects. The role covers the full lifecycle of the project, from design and system integration to equipment installation, on-site support, and commissioning, with a strong focus on piping and pneumatic systems. The MLE ensures compliance with Quality, Cost, and Delivery (QCD) objectives, technical requirements, safety standards, and installation constraints.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mechanical Design & System Integration: Lead the design, development, and integration of mechanical systems, with a strong focus on piping layouts and pneumatic circuits used in rolling stock applications (braking systems, compressed air supply, control systems). Define and validate mechanical architectures, interfaces, and technical solutions in accordance with system requirements. Ensure proper integration of piping and pneumatic components within space, structural, safety, and maintainability constraints. Review and approve mechanical designs, drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Equipment Installation & Field Engineering: Lead and support equipment installation activities, ensuring mechanical equipment, piping, and pneumatic systems are installed according to design intent. Act as the technical reference during installation, providing on-site or remote support to installation, production, and commissioning teams. Review and validate installation procedures, methods, and sequencing. Resolve technical issues and non-conformities identified during installation and testing. Ensure alignment between as-designed and as-installed configurations, including management of deviations and updates to documentation. Support mechanical handover to commissioning teams and contribute to system validation.
  • Project & Technical Leadership: Coordinate and plan mechanical engineering activities and deliverables across project phases. Lead mechanical design reviews and installation readiness reviews. Identify technical risks related to design, installation, or interfaces, and implement mitigation actions. Monitor progress and report technical status to project and engineering management. Ensure mechanical activities meet project milestones and QCD targets.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with system engineering, electrical, industrialization, manufacturing, quality, and commissioning teams. Manage mechanical interfaces with suppliers and external partners, including follow-up of deliverables and installation support. Ensure effective communication between engineering and site teams to align design and installation execution.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in mechanical engineering, preferably in railway, transportation, or heavy industrial environments.
  • Strong expertise in piping design and pneumatic systems (schematics, routing, sizing, validation) used in rolling stock applications.
  • Experience with CAD tools, specifically CATIA V5.
  • Good knowledge of engineering standards, safety, and quality processes.
  • Knowledge of GD&T.
  • Proven experience supporting equipment installation and field engineering activities.

Nice to Have

  • French language skills.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation.

Soft Skills

  • Demonstrated leadership and coordination skills in a project environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical capabilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple interfaces and priorities simultaneously.
  • Effective communication skills with multidisciplinary teams and suppliers.
