Are you an experienced and dependable HGV driver who enjoys life on the road and takes pride in delivering excellent service? P W Gates is looking for a Class 1 Tramper Driver to join our transport team at our Welwyn Garden City – Bridge Road site.
Role Overview
As a Class 1 Tramper Driver, you’ll be a key part of our transport operation, ensuring the safe and timely delivery of goods across the UK. Working with both box and curtain-sided trailers, you’ll represent P W Gates on the road providing a professional and dependable service to our customers at every stop. This role is ideal for a confident driver who enjoys the independence of tramping work and is committed to maintaining high standards of safety and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete general haulage deliveries and collections using box and curtain-side trailers.
- Carry out daily vehicle checks and report defects in line with company procedures.
- Ensure all goods are secured safely and transported in accordance with regulations.
- Maintain accurate records using a digital tachograph and follow driver’s hour’s legislation.
- Provide excellent customer service and represent the company professionally at all times.
- Adhere to all health, safety, and road compliance requirements.
- Full HGV Class 1 (C+E) Driving Licence.
- Valid Driver CPC and digital tachograph card.
- No more than 6 penalty points (no IN or DR codes).
- Previous experience in general haulage or tramping work.
- Reliable, flexible, and professional approach to work.
- Strong understanding of road safety and compliance requirements.
It would be an advantage if candidates also have:
- Previous night trunking or long-distance driving experience.
- Familiarity with PDA’s (Personal Digital Assistant Scanner’s) and vehicle telematics systems.
- Experience handling paperwork such as delivery notes, manifests and PODs.
- A strong geographical knowledge of the UK road network.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing routes, schedules, or operational needs.
- A positive attitude and commitment to high customer service standards.
