The Opportunity

PW Construction Recruitment is working with a growing, well-established regional civils and groundworks contractor to recruit an experienced Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join their busy commercial team. This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious Assistant QS who already has hands-on experience within the groundworks or civil engineering sector and is now looking for greater responsibility, exposure to multiple live projects and a clear opportunity to develop their commercial career.

Reporting directly to the Commercial Manager, you will work across a portfolio of live groundworks and civils schemes, supporting their commercial delivery from initial stages through to final account. This isn't a purely office-based role. You'll regularly visit sites to take measurements, assess progress and work closely with operational teams, giving you excellent exposure to both the commercial and practical delivery of projects.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the commercial management of multiple live civils and groundworks projects
  • Visiting sites to undertake measurements and assess completed works
  • Preparing and processing valuations and applications for payment
  • Processing subcontractor invoices and payments
  • Assisting with subcontractor procurement and account management
  • Identifying, recording and managing variations
  • Monitoring project costs, budgets and commercial performance
  • Working closely with Site Managers, Contracts Managers and the wider commercial team
  • Assisting with cost reporting and forecasting
  • Maintaining accurate commercial records and project documentation
  • Taking commercial responsibility for smaller schemes where appropriate
  • Supporting projects through to final account

About You

We're looking for somebody who can hit the ground running and add value from day one. Ideally, you will have:

  • 3+ years' experience within Quantity Surveying or a construction commercial role
  • Previous experience working on live civil engineering and/or groundworks projects
  • A good practical understanding of groundworks and site operations
  • Experience with measurements, valuations, subcontractor payments and variations
  • The confidence to visit sites and work directly with operational teams
  • The ability to manage your own workload across several live projects
  • A proactive approach and willingness to take responsibility
  • The commercial confidence to take the lead on smaller schemes
  • Strong numerical, organisational and communication skills
  • A full UK driving licence

A construction-related degree, HNC or HND would be advantageous, but is not essential. Relevant industry experience, commercial awareness and the ability to demonstrate a strong practical understanding of the role will be equally valued.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

You’ll be joining a growing civils and groundworks business backed by an established regional construction group, offering the security of a successful organisation alongside the opportunity to play an important role within an expanding specialist division. Rather than being restricted to a single project or narrow package, you’ll gain exposure to multiple live schemes, working closely with an experienced Commercial Manager and operational teams. For the right candidate, there will also be the opportunity to take increasing ownership of smaller projects and develop towards a fully‑fledged Quantity Surveyor position.

What's On Offer?

£35,000 – £45,000 basic salary, dependent upon experience, plus package. In addition, you'll benefit from:

  • Exposure to a varied portfolio of civils and groundworks projects
  • Increasing commercial responsibility and autonomy
  • The opportunity to take ownership of smaller schemes
  • Direct support and mentoring from an experienced Commercial Manager
  • Excellent scope for career progression
  • The stability of joining an established and growing regional construction business
