About the role
The Payroll Trainer leads, mentors, and accelerates the development of a dedicated pod of four entry‑level Academy Associates within the SAMpeople Payroll Academy in Wakefield. The role focuses on delivering structured training, overseeing daily operations, ensuring compliance with HMRC regulations, and building a high‑energy learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Steer the daily delivery of the intensive, systems‑based onboarding curriculum for the Academy pod.
- Coach team members with regular one‑on‑one reviews, providing constructive feedback and improving data input accuracy.
- Maintain and update training materials, troubleshooting guides, and workflow documentation.
- Audit and perform meticulous quality and compliance checks on 100% of all end‑to‑end payroll runs, variable data inputs, and documentation.
- Analyse and track recurring data entry errors, turning mistakes into teachable moments and implementing corrective training.
- Safeguard service level agreements by ensuring all baseline administrative and verification tasks are completed accurately within payroll deadlines.
- Lead daily stand‑ups, coordinate workflows, and facilitate collaborative problem‑solving sessions.
- Monitor and document each team member’s progression, moving them from supervised tasks to autonomous portfolio management.
- Cultivate a positive, collaborative, and inclusive environment that encourages peer‑to‑peer learning and maintains high morale.
Essential Qualifications
- Prior experience processing payroll or delivering training in the education sector.
- Proven experience in structured learning, technical mentorship, or coaching within a payroll or finance environment.
- Deep functional knowledge of end‑to‑end payroll processing, internal payroll applications, data compliance rules, and HMRC regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to lead daily stand‑ups, coordinate workflows, and manage performance progression of entry‑level personnel.
- Meticulous attention to detail with a track record of performing quality and compliance audits on financial data inputs.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to deliver constructive feedback and create an inclusive learning environment.
- Desirable: experience creating or updating academy training materials, troubleshooting guides, and workflow documentation.
- Understanding and willingness to develop the academy using AI frameworks for efficiency.
