About the FCA and team

We regulate financial services firms in the UK, to keep financial markets fair, thriving and effective. By joining us, you'll play a key part in protecting consumers, driving economic growth, and shaping the future of UK finance services.

SPC oversees firms and individuals (supervision), creates and reviews the rules by which they operate (policy) and identifies and remedies ineffective competition in markets (competition). Sitting in the Payments and Digital Assets directorate, the Market Intervention department supervises and drives regulatory standards in payments and crypto asset firms.

The role of the payments services sector is rapidly becoming increasingly significant to the operation of the UK financial services system and beyond. This role presents an exciting opportunity for personal development and progression in this innovative, fast-expanding and technology-based sector.

Role responsibilities

  • Getting to understand how regulated firms make their money, assessing the risks this presents to their customers and the markets in which they operate and determining how the firms manage these risks to stop customers being harmed, for example through the loss of their money.
  • Assessing regulated firms' compliance against the relevant rules and requirements.
  • Working with senior industry figures to change how they operate if they are not meeting the rules and requirements and in the most severe cases taking regulatory action to stop firms operating their businesses.
  • Collaborating effectively and closely with colleagues across the FCA, other regulators and law enforcement agencies both in the UK and internationally.

Skills required

Minimum:

  • Demonstrable experience of analysing complex information, and making sound, proportionate risk-based judgements and recommendations.
  • Demonstrable experience building and managing relationships with stakeholders at all levels, including senior management, showing effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience managing a varied, high volume, and demanding workload, while maintaining well-developed organisational skills.

Essential:

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills including ability to write briefings and letters, and capable of communicating effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience of investigations or other problem-solving case work.
  • Curiosity, drive and motivation to continually learn about and investigate issues within the firms and industry we supervise.
  • Willingness to learn and develop yourself and others, taking on new responsibilities and adopting a flexible and pragmatic approach to your work.
  • Experience of effective teamwork, working with others to deliver outcomes and complete tasks.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines in a busy, demanding environment.
  • Ability to present yourself and the FCA in a professional and credible manner, with effective oral and presentation skills.

Benefits

  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays.
  • Hybrid model where employees work a minimum of 40% in the office each month (expectation of 50% for senior leaders).

  • Non-contributory pension (8-12% depending on age) and life assurance at eight times your salary.
  • Private healthcare with Bupa, income protection, and 24/7 Employee Assistance.
  • 35 hours of paid volunteering annually.
  • A flexible benefits scheme designed around your lifestyle.
