Key Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering, maintenance, and breakdown support to the hospital site, ensuring prompt and effective resolution of any issues that arise.
  • Review work orders within the Maintenance Management System (MMS) and allocate the appropriate resources to either site.

Serve as the primary day‑to‑day customer interface for Engineering matters.

  • Hold line management responsibility for all on‑site engineering operatives within the designated hospital, providing direction and support to ensure high performance.
  • Ensure that the Engineering Planned Preventative Maintenance Routine is carried out as detailed in the Standard Operating Procedure manuals, utilising a Computer‑Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) based system.
  • Guarantee a timely response to all reactive calls within the Service Level Agreement (SLA), maintaining consistent service quality.
  • Escalate and manage reactive calls that require specialist attention, coordinating with external contractors to resolve more complex issues.
  • Attend, support, and, where necessary, report at hospital governance meetings to ensure alignment with organisational objectives and compliance standards.
  • Ensure site safety and operational efficiency by adhering to Health & Safety regulations and proactively identifying and mitigating potential risks.

Effectively manage the permit to work system to oversee high‑risk activities on site.

  • Contribute constructive feedback regarding maintenance findings to support ongoing improvements in planned maintenance and techniques, aiming for a condition‑based maintenance approach.
  • Serve as the designated Responsible Person (RP MGPS) for Medical Gases first‑line support onsite, including authoring low‑hazard permits, delivering practical medical gas training, and collaborating closely with the Authorised Person (APMGPS).

The Senior Engineering Manager may also assume AP(MGPS) responsibilities.

  • Support compulsory audits and assessments such as Legionella, Fire Safety, and Health & Safety compliance.
  • Provide operational assistance and input to Project Management as required, ensuring consistency in standards and specifications across the hospital.
  • Coordinate and participate in out‑of‑hours on‑call cover for hospital operations as necessary.
  • Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Proven experience in line management within a maintenance environment, following the completion of an apprenticeship or relevant qualifications.
  • Strong background in managing and coordinating contractors and service engineers to ensure effective delivery of maintenance services.
  • Possession of City & Guilds Part 3, HNC, NVQ Level 4 or equivalent, preferably specialising in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Sound understanding of quality management principles, customer satisfaction, and the continuous improvement process.
  • Familiarity with Legionella prevention requirements in hospital settings, supporting a safe and compliant environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, coupled with strong interpersonal abilities to foster effective teamwork and collaboration.
  • Demonstrated organisational and time management skills, particularly in environments with multiple and competing priorities.
  • Proficient in applying sound fault finding techniques to diagnose and resolve technical issues efficiently.
  • Completion of fire safety or fire risk assessment training, supporting best practice in safety management.
  • Previous experience working with a Computer‑Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) system.
  • IOSH Health and Safety and Risk Assessment training, equipping the candidate to assess and mitigate workplace risks.
  • L8 / ACOP Legionella training, reinforcing compliance with water safety standards.
