IT Services is the central IT department of the University of Oxford.

It plays a critical role in enabling Oxford's research, teaching and administration by providing the digital systems, services and expertise that keep the University running day to day and support innovation in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Within IT Services, Software Solutions develops, enhances and supports business applications used across the University, working collaboratively with colleagues, stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams to deliver reliable, secure and continuously improving services.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Enterprise Applications Senior Developer, App Modernisation to join us on a fixed term basis for 3 years.

About the Role

As Enterprise Applications Senior Developer, App Modernisation, you will take a leading technical role in the Enterprise Applications Team, spearheading critical application modernisation initiatives across the University's business applications estate.

You will help modernise legacy systems so that they meet current security, performance and maintainability baselines.

You will plan and lead work to upgrade legacy .

NET Framework systems and custom business software to modern .

This will involve refactoring applications, managing dependencies, migrating source code and hosting components, remediating vulnerabilities, improving database backends and strengthening Dev Sec Ops and Application Lifecycle Management practices.

The role offers the opportunity to be a lead subject matter expert on modernisation, working closely with Security Assurance, System Architects, Business Analysts, product teams and other colleagues to plan safe migration paths and deliver improvements that create practical value for end users.

You will also provide documentation, peer code review, technical guidance and mentoring to help the team adopt modern coding and ALM standards.

About You

  • Significant demonstrable experience of developing, maintaining, supporting and modernising complex business-critical applications, or equivalent professional training and experience in a computing or IT-related discipline.
  • Deep hands-on development expertise across legacy .

NET Framework and modern .

NET environments, C#, ASP.

NET, SQL Server database design and current approaches in Power Platform.

  • Demonstrable experience in code security analysis, vulnerability remediation, upgrading vulnerable packages and applying secure development practices.
  • Practical experience managing Git-based version control and Azure Dev Ops, or equivalent, for build and deployment automation.
  • Proven experience refactoring legacy systems, transitioning applications towards modern hosting or cloud platforms and managing associated migration challenges.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder collaboration skills, with the ability to empathise, listen, engage and explain technical debt, security risks and modernisation approaches clearly.
  • A collaborative approach, with experience conducting structured code reviews, producing technical documentation and coaching or pairing with other developers to promote modern standards.
  • Strong organisation and task-management skills, including prioritising, estimating, scheduling and taking responsibility for a varied workload with competing priorities.
