Overview

Mechanical Design / Development Engineer – Renishaw, Wotton under Edge.

Up to £42,000 depending on experience.

Based at the global HQ in South Gloucestershire.

Responsible for production support and design improvements to ensure the ongoing quality, performance, and reliability of existing spindle probe products.

The role focuses on continuous development and maintenance of a range of kinematic and associated products within current product environments.

The product portfolio includes kinematic probes, product interfaces, and probe accessories that are high‑value components within machine tool probing solutions.

The role requires technical ownership, commercial awareness, and the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects while collaborating with manufacturing, quality, and global stakeholders.

Our products serve industries including automotive, aerospace and defence, medical and dental, and consumer electronics.

Responsibilities

  • Provide reactive production support for current products (kinematic spindle probes, interfaces and accessories) and identify solutions to quality issues across CNC machine tool applications.
  • Perform engineering drafting: create/update CAD models, verify BOM structures, and manage design changes using established change control processes.
  • Liaise with customers and subsidiaries to manage technical and quality concerns, investigate root causes, and report findings efficiently.
  • Continuously improve existing product lines, including upgrades, obsolescence management, cost-reduction initiatives, and investigations to resolution.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including embedded software and electronics design, to support innovative products and manufacturing processes.
  • Capture and document critical technical requirements for product development and drive changes through the formal design change management system.

Qualifications

  • HND or degree in a relevant discipline with practical mechanical design experience.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD/CAM (Siemens NX preferred).
  • Strong problem-solving skills with ability to work to root cause and develop robust solutions.
  • Experience with standard drafting practices and BOM structures; familiarity with change management.
  • Effective communication skills at technical and project levels with stakeholders.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of machine tool products and their applications.
  • Experience with the product development lifecycle and ERP systems.
  • Understanding of FEA and interpretation of results.
