About The Role
FDM is a global business and technology consultancy seeking a Data Engineer with 5 years+ commercial experience to join a high-profile team supporting the decommissioning of legacy applications and the migration of data to modern platforms within a leading global investment bank.
This is initially a 6 month contract with very good prospects to extend and will be a hybrid role based in London.
This role requires a highly analytical and technically capable engineer with strong SQL expertise, data investigation skills and a structured approach to problem solving.
You will work with large and complex datasets to identify data quality issues, investigate failing business processes and support critical data migration and transformation initiatives.

Responsibilities
- Support the decommissioning of legacy applications through the extraction, analysis, validation and migration of data to target platforms.
- Investigate data-related issues impacting business processes, applications and downstream systems.
- Analyse large and complex datasets to identify anomalies, inconsistencies, trends and data quality concerns.
- Navigate complex database schemas to understand data relationships and determine the most effective approach to analysis and troubleshooting.
- Design, develop, optimise and troubleshoot SQL queries across large-scale database environments.
- Validate data quality, integrity and completeness throughout migration and transformation activities.
- Conduct root cause analysis to identify and resolve issues where the source of a problem is not immediately apparent.
- Work with both structured and unstructured datasets to support business and technical objectives.
- Translate business requirements into data queries, analysis activities and technical solutions.
- Apply logical and methodical problem-solving techniques to complex or ambiguous challenges.
- Communicate progress, risks, issues and blockers proactively within a collaborative delivery team.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across data quality, migration processes and engineering practices.
- Collaborate closely with technical teams, business stakeholders and data specialists to deliver successful migration outcomes.
- Contribute to the successful modernisation of data platforms and the retirement of legacy systems.
About You - SQL
- Strong SQL skills with experience working across large and complex datasets.
- Ability to navigate complex database schemas and understand data relationships.
- Experience writing and optimising complex joins.
- Understanding of database indexing strategies and query performance optimisation.
- Experience interrogating large volumes of data to identify issues and uncover insights.
- Strong understanding of data validation and reconciliation techniques.

- Experience using Python for data analysis, investigation, automation, and problem-solving.
- Ability to manipulate, analyse, and validate data using Python-based tools and libraries.
- Data Analysis & Engineering
- Experience investigating data issues and performing root cause analysis.
- Ability to identify patterns, anomalies, inconsistencies, and data quality concerns within large datasets.
- Experience working with complex data environments containing numerous interconnected data sources and tables.
- Understanding of data migration, transformation, and validation processes.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to approach problems in a structured and logical manner.
Desirable Skills
- Exposure to cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
- Knowledge of UNIX/Linux environments.
- Experience supporting application decommissioning, modernisation, or migration programmes.
