The Language Centre at the University of Cambridge is seeking a part-time (0.19FTE) Teaching Associate to teach Swahili. The Cambridge University Language Programmes (CULP) offers language courses in eighteen languages from basic to advanced levels, alongside a range of courses for specific purposes.
Our learners include undergraduate and graduate students, University staff, and a small number of members of the public. The role holder will be expected to teach Swahili language courses at all levels, with a strong initial focus on beginners to lower-intermediate levels. They will teach two groups during the Michaelmas and Lent terms (October - March), with the possibility of teaching one more group in the Easter term. Michaelmas and Lent term teaching will take place face-to-face at the Centre for African Studies. Courses will be delivered in a blended mode (classroom teaching combined with the Moodle Virtual Learning Environment).
You will have experience of teaching Swahili in British Higher Education (or equivalent), a fluent or near-fluent command of Swahili, and an understanding of the cultures of Swahili-speaking countries. You will be fluent in English with a sound command of the grammar of both languages. Ideally, you will hold a postgraduate degree in languages, applied linguistics, or a related field.
You will have excellent interpersonal, intercultural and communication skills, the ability to motivate a wide range of learners, and to prepare and deliver lessons independently as well as work collaboratively within a team. You will be a competent user of IT, understand the role of Artificial Intelligence in language teaching and assessment, and be confident in the design and production of digital teaching materials and their integration into the syllabus and Moodle.
