Overview
The University of Cambridge's Information Services is seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join a multidisciplinary development team of about 50 engineers.
You will contribute to high-profile bespoke web systems and cloud-native services while modernising existing applications.
This is a hybrid role with benefits including a defined benefit pension and 41 days of annual leave inclusive of public holidays.
Our services are public-facing and support University staff and students (~60,000 people), impacting the reputation of a leading university.
We develop new services using modern web architectural standards with emphasis on reusability, APIs, test automation, and CI.
Services are deployed to cloud infrastructure in Docker containers.
Our technology stack includes Google Cloud, Terraform, Docker, Python, Django, React, and Type Script.
We maintain a Dev Ops culture and use Scrum; open by default in our work and repository practices, with guidance in our Guidebook.
Headquartered in a collaborative environment, you will work across products and teams to build consistent architectures and think through their impact on other services and the wider organisation.
Responsibilities
- Architect secure-by-design web applications and APIs with a focus on maintainability and stability, using clean code.
- Integrate applications via APIs, event buses, and asynchronous tasks.
- Write expert-level Python and Django, with working knowledge of Type Script and React (or comparable languages and frameworks).
- Package web applications in Docker containers and maintain reliable deployment artefacts.
- Write and apply efficient tests with knowledge of testing frameworks and best practices; conduct thorough code reviews.
- Use AI coding assistants effectively, write clear prompts, review AI-generated code for correctness, security, and maintainability.
- Build CI/CD pipelines in Git Lab to test and deploy web applications to the cloud using Terraform.
- Work with Google Cloud or similar cloud platforms; manage software requirements, priorities, and dependencies.
- Drive improvements in technical architecture, standards, and processes and select appropriate solutions.
- Debug effectively in unfamiliar applications.
Requirements (Qualifications)
- Strong experience in modern software development, testing, security, and operations.
- Expertise in Architecting secure, maintainable web applications and APIs.
- Proficiency in Python and Django; working knowledge of Type Script and React.
- Experience packaging and deploying applications in Docker containers; familiarity with CI/CD practices.
- Experience with API integration, event-driven architectures, and asynchronous processing.
- Proven ability to conduct code reviews and uphold coding standards.
- Ability to apply AI tools pragmatically while ensuring code quality and security.
- Experience with Git Lab CI/CD, Terraform, and cloud platforms such as Google Cloud.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work in cross-functional, Dev Ops-aligned teams.
