Overview
The Rayner and Deane Laboratories at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research are recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on a team project examining the function of a multi-gene family expanded in Plasmodium vivax and related malaria parasites.
The project investigates these tryptophan-rich antigens (TRAgs) with lipid binding activity and potential roles in remodelling membranes, using CRISPR/Cas9 to knockout and tag TRAg genes in P. knowlesi, including lines generated by other team members.
The successful candidate will contribute to collaborative papers and the broader research program.
This is a short-term, full-time fixed-term position for 1 year from the start date.
Responsibilities
- Carry out high-quality academic research contributing directly to collaborative papers.
- Work as part of an interdisciplinary team in the Rayner and Deane labs and contribute to a positive team environment; support and train others where needed; help create the best possible outputs within the time available.
- Apply methodologies across a range of cell biological and biochemical assays to explore the function of TRAg genes.
- Participate in experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation in collaboration with project partners.
- Adhere to laboratory safety, ethics, and compliance requirements.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Demonstrable experience in culturing and transfecting Plasmodium parasites, with experience in P. knowlesi particularly desirable.
- Extensive experience in molecular biology techniques (e. g., Gibson assembly) to generate and validate complex genetic manipulation vectors.
- Experience in relevant cell biology techniques such as immunofluorescence, expansion and live imaging microscopy, and flow cytometry.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a track record of scientific judgement, innovation and effective communication.
