We are seeking a highly motivated Research Fellow to join an exciting programme investigating the mechanisms underlying white matter injury caused by chronic cerebral hypoperfusion and hypoxia. The successful candidate will contribute to research aimed at understanding how glial cells, particularly oligodendrocytes, respond to vascular insufficiency and how these responses contribute to demyelination, remyelination failure and cognitive impairment. The project combines in vivo disease models with advanced cellular and molecular approaches, including electrophysiology, high-resolution imaging, molecular biology and ultrastructural analysis. The successful candidate will work within a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment and will have opportunities to develop independent research, publish in leading journals, present findings at international conferences and contribute to future grant applications.
You will hold (or be close to completing) a PhD in neuroscience, physiology, cell biology or a related discipline. You should have experience in several of the following areas:
- glial biology
- oligodendrocyte biology or white matter research
- rodent models of neurological disease
- whole-cell patch-clamp electrophysiology
- calcium imaging
- confocal and fluorescence microscopy
- immunohistochemistry and quantitative image analysis
- molecular cloning and viral vector design
- stereotaxic surgery and viral delivery
- primary neural cell culture and organotypic slice culture
- transmission electron microscopy
- statistical analysis of biological data
You should demonstrate excellent organisational and communication skills, be able to work independently while contributing effectively to collaborative research, and have a strong publication record relative to career stage.
