Biodiversity Data and Evidence Officer in Birmingham

The Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust is seeking a Biodiversity Data and Evidence Officer to support nature conservation and ecological recovery across Birmingham and the Black Country. The role offers flexible working arrangements, including regular home working and occasional travel throughout the region. This is a permanent, full-time position (37.5 hours per week) with a salary ranging from £25,061 to £27,927, depending on experience. This role presents an exciting opportunity to contribute directly to the protection and recovery of wildlife in one of the UK's most urbanised areas.

The successful candidate will work within EcoRecord, the region's Environmental Records Centre, supporting the collection, management, analysis and digitisation of ecological information relating to species, habitats and designated sites. The data managed by EcoRecord plays a vital role in informing conservation decisions, supporting wildlife site designation, and ensuring that nature is considered within planning and development processes. As part of a wider network of Local Environmental Records Centres across the UK, EcoRecord provides information and services to a variety of users, including local authorities, statutory agencies, ecological consultants, recording groups and conservation organisations.

The Biodiversity Data and Evidence Officer will therefore help ensure that reliable, high-quality ecological evidence is available to support environmental decision-making and biodiversity conservation. A key part of the role involves using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and specialist databases, including Recorder 6, to manage and analyse ecological data. The postholder will assist with the development of EcoRecord's data infrastructure, contribute to improving data management systems and processes, and help enhance the availability and accessibility of ecological information. They will also support the production of data products and services that inform conservation projects and biodiversity recovery initiatives across the region.

In addition to technical data management responsibilities, the role includes promoting high-quality biological recording and supporting local recording networks. The successful candidate will work with specialist species groups, volunteers and community initiatives, helping to strengthen biological recording activity throughout Birmingham and the Black Country. This includes contributing to projects such as the City Nature Challenge and supporting the development of new volunteer-led recording groups. The postholder will assist with the day-to-day operation of the records centre, including maintaining and developing key datasets and analytical processes. They will also contribute to the Wildlife Trust's communications activities by producing content for social media, websites and other online platforms in collaboration with colleagues. Volunteer recruitment and supervision, particularly in relation to surveying and data entry activities, will also form part of the role.
