On 1 August 2026, the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent will form a multi-university group called London and South-East (LASE) University Group. You will be employed by LASE but will work as part of the University of Greenwich academic division, contributing to its strengths, community and identity while being part of a wider group. LASE aims to deliver outstanding education, impactful research, and meaningful regional and global impact.
The appointment is within the School of Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Science at the University of Greenwich, with a focus on Digital Engineering and infrastructure and the built environment. The position operates across two campuses (Greenwich in London and Medway in Kent) and will be primarily based at the Greenwich campus, providing academic leadership across Digital Engineering portfolios. This role supports the School’s strategic ambition to develop internationally recognised capability in digital infrastructure, smart cities, digital twins, BIM, intelligent infrastructure systems, sustainable built environment technologies, data-driven engineering and applied AI within the built environment sector.
We welcome candidates who can demonstrate leadership to inspire and lead high-performing research groups, centres and interdisciplinary collaborations, secure external research and innovation funding, supervise doctoral researchers and develop strategic partnerships with industry, government and international collaborators. The successful candidate will shape the School's research strategy and contribute to the University’s ambitions in REF, KEF, innovation, industrial engagement and international research collaboration. The role offers opportunities to contribute to the future direction of Digital Engineering within a dynamic School with growing research and enterprise aspirations. Depending on experience, there may be opportunities for wider academic leadership and management roles within the School (e.g., Deputy Head of School, Associate Head of School, Director of Research, Portfolio Leadership).
While the role includes contribution to research-informed teaching and postgraduate supervision, the emphasis is on strategic research leadership, research capacity building and international profile development. We welcome applications from candidates with strong academic leadership experience, internationally recognised research outputs, experience of leading collaborative and interdisciplinary research activity, and a proven track record of securing external funding from UKRI, Innovate UK, Horizon Europe and industry.
Responsibilities
- Provide academic leadership across Digital Engineering portfolios and contribute to strategic research direction within the School.
- Shape the School's research strategy and contribute to REF, KEF, innovation, industrial engagement and international collaboration.
- Develop strategic partnerships with industry, government and international collaborators; secure external funding and manage complex research projects.
- Lead, inspire and manage high-performing research groups, centres and interdisciplinary collaborations; supervise doctoral researchers.
- Contribute to research-informed teaching and postgraduate supervision where appropriate.
- Take on wider academic leadership and management responsibilities within the School as experience and opportunities allow (e.g., Deputy Head of School, Associate Head of School, Director of Research, Portfolio Leadership).
Qualifications and requirements
- Strong academic leadership experience with internationally recognised research outputs.
- Experience leading collaborative and interdisciplinary research activity.
- Proven ability to secure external funding from sources such as UKRI, Innovate UK, Horizon Europe and industry.
- Vision and credibility to lead strategic development in Digital Engineering, including areas such as digital infrastructure, smart cities, digital twins, BIM, intelligent infrastructure systems, sustainable built environment technologies, data-driven engineering and applied AI in the built environment sector.
- Ability to supervise doctoral researchers and develop strategic partnerships with industry, government and international collaborators.

Salary
Salary: £58,225 to £81,790 plus £4,228 London weighting per annum.
