Job Description

Salary: £350 for ten forty-minute lessons each term*

*£35 for each 40 minute lesson (Senior school pupils)

£27 for each 30 minute lesson (Junior school pupils)

£14 for each shared lesson (Junior school pupils)

We are seeking to appoint an inspiring and high-achieving peripatetic double bass teacher to join the Music Department at Putney High, teaching double bass to pupils in the Senior School. The job will currently require one day of teaching, ideally a Thursday.

Music provides the heartbeat to life at Putney High Senior School; it has a wonderfully vibrant and inclusive department, and pupils are passionate about music.

The curriculum is varied and stimulating, and there is a thriving, full co-curricular programme; pupils enjoy choirs, orchestras and ensembles, led predominantly by the Director of Music.

Approximately ninety percent of pupils learn a musical instrument from a flourishing team of visiting music teachers.

Regular performances take place throughout the school year, including the Carol Service, concerts, and productions.

The candidate will be a specialist in their instrument and arrange lessons for pupils of a wide range of abilities, fostering a lifelong interest in making music. The successful candidate should be able to work with pupils beyond Grade 8 standard.

Peripatetic Music staff

This is a part-time, flexible, term time, self-employed agreement. Fees are paid directly by parents to the teacher.

The double bass teacher will:

  • Plan, prepare and teach lessons in accordance with Examination Board (ABRSM/Trinity) specifications;
  • Ensure that all pupils are working at a level and pace appropriate to their ability;
  • Prepare pupils for examinations and concerts as necessary;
  • Liaise with parents regularly to review timetables and progress;
  • Organise own timetable to ensure pupils rotate;
  • Keep an accurate record of lessons delivered and attendance;
  • Liaise with the Senior Director of Music regarding progress and issues with any pupil in their charge;
  • Write reports at the appropriate times (normally two reports per academic year);
  • Be aware of and follow all School procedures regarding Child Protection and Safeguarding, Health & Safety and Risk Assessment;
  • Undertake any other duties that may reasonably be assigned by the Director of Music

Personal Profile

  • A musical qualification (music degree or certificate/diploma relevant to their main instrument);
  • Dynamic, effective teaching strategies that engage all learners;
  • An enthusiasm for working with children of all ages;
  • The desire to work as part of a team;
  • A readiness to be flexible;
  • Excellent organisational skills, reliability and punctuality;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
