About the service user

I am a 36-year-old lady living with my parents in Cambridge. I am severely autistic with a severe speech disorder and small hearing loss. I have a medical condition, hydrocephalus. I will need some help with personal care but mainly a friend who can do activities in the home to occupy me. I live in a fully equipped home with lots of resources. I only want a small number of hours initially with possibilities to increase in the future as I struggle with making new social contacts.

Hours and pay

Hours: Up to 10 hours per week
£17 per hour

Requirements

Enhanced DBS clearance is essential.

What you would be doing

You will be helping with personal care and daily routines such as cooking, sewing, crafting, shopping, doing puzzles, looking at children’s books, watching children’s DVDs with me and listening to my audio tapes. In time, we would like you to get involved in preparing projects and initiating ideas if able.

Person specification

The person I would like: ideally someone who is kind, patient, trustworthy, with great communication skills. A driver would be great but is not essential. You must be able to tolerate repetition and lone working at times. Initially you will be expected to work alongside parents using observation skills to learn the requirements. Further training opportunities may be available should you want them. I really do need a commitment to this role, to build a lasting relationship, due to my difficulties relating to new people and the time required to learn the skills to support me effectively. You will need to understand that my needs change hourly pending my health and mood; therefore the duties will be varied.

Additional information

We have one young, small dog. English GCSE required. Willingness and interest to learn how to support me using my voice aided communication device. I use different communication strategies; written, signed (signed supporting English) and spoken but mainly voice aided communication with my Light writer.

Closing

We look forward to meeting you and thanks for looking.
