An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated Out of Hours (OOH) Veterinary Surgeon to join a highly respected Tier 3 small animal hospital in Nottinghamshire. This is a fantastic role for a vet seeking an attractive work-life balance, a varied caseload, and the support of an experienced, certificate-led team working within a well-equipped hospital environment.
The Role
We are seeking a permanent OOH Veterinary Surgeon to support the inpatient and emergency caseload. The role involves:
- Caring for and working up any inpatients
- Receiving and managing out-of-hours emergency calls
- Covering a one-week-on, two-weeks-off rota (Monday evening to the following Monday morning); open to flexibility on other rota arrangements
- Working alongside a dedicated OOH nursing team who share the same rota
- Use of a nearby semi-detached house solely for OOH accommodation during working weeks
This rota structure provides an excellent work-life balance, with significant downtime between working weeks.
About the Hospital
This Tier 3 hospital has an outstanding local reputation and operates as a hybrid between first-opinion and referral-level care, thanks to its exceptional facilities and the expertise of its clinical team. The hospital benefits from:

The Caseload & Clinical Team
The hospital supports a varied mix of first-opinion cases and referral-level work with a large multidisciplinary team including numerous certificate holders. Vets with advanced qualifications or studying towards certificates in Surgery, Internal Medicine, Imaging, Ophthalmology, Anaesthesia, Dermatology, Endoscopy, and more.
The surgical team routinely performs:
- BOAS procedures
- TPLO/CCWO and patella surgery
- Fracture repairs
- Cholecystectomy
- Liver lobe resections
- TECA surgery
Complementary services such as laser therapy, acupuncture, and physiotherapy are also available. The wider team includes over 50 clinical and support staff who share a strong ethos of compassion, collaboration, and clinical excellence.

The hospital is located in a thriving town positioned between Nottingham and Derby. With excellent transport links—including nearby M1 junctions, a local train station, a reliable bus network, and close proximity to East Midlands Airport—this is an ideal location for both local and commuting professionals.
