An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and compassionate Out-of-Hours Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) to join a busy and supportive veterinary team in Cambridge. This role is ideal for an RVN with a passion for emergency and critical care (ECC), inpatient nursing, and anaesthesia, who thrives in a fast-paced clinical environment and enjoys variety in their caseload.

Working within a multi-disciplinary referral hospital, the successful candidate will gain hands‑on exposure to both first opinion out-of-hours cases and specialist referral inpatients, while collaborating closely with experienced veterinary surgeons and specialists.

The Role

As an Out-of-Hours RVN / Night Nurse, the successful candidate will play a central role in delivering exceptional overnight patient care, including:

  • Emergency triage and critical care nursing
  • Monitoring and caring for hospitalised inpatients
  • Anaesthesia support and perioperative care
  • Assisting veterinary surgeons with emergency procedures
  • Maintaining accurate patient records and clinical standards
  • Delivering compassionate care to patients and clients during out-of-hours periods

This is a highly collaborative environment with a strong team ethos, offering the opportunity to work alongside European and RCVS Specialists while continuing to develop advanced clinical skills.

Shift Pattern

The role operates on a repeating 21‑day rota, consisting of:

  • 7 Night Shifts: 18:30 – 07:30
  • 1 Saturday Shift: 11:00 – 18:45
  • 1 Sunday Shift: 07:30 – 18:45

In addition to the standard rota, the successful candidate may be required to work up to 156 additional hours annually on an ad hoc basis to support operational requirements, holiday cover, or staff absences. Average working hours equate to approximately 40 hours per week across the year.
