About the Role
You will lead and deliver complex sustainability commissions, focusing on embodied carbon and whole life carbon assessments across building and infrastructure projects.
Working closely with design teams and clients, you will translate technical analysis into clear, actionable strategies that align with BREEAM and broader sustainability objectives.
Your work will directly support net zero pathways and enhance the environmental performance of major developments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead embodied carbon and whole life carbon assessments for new build and refurbishment projects, from early concept through to detailed design.
- Develop and refine project-specific low-carbon strategies, advising clients and design teams on materials, construction methods, and lifecycle impacts.
- Coordinate and deliver BREEAM assessments, ensuring evidence is gathered, submissions are completed, and targeted ratings are achieved.
- Provide technical input into sustainability frameworks, policies, and design guidelines for clients and internal teams.
- Present findings, reports, and recommendations to stakeholders, clearly communicating complex carbon and sustainability data.
- Mentor and support junior consultants, reviewing their work and building capability within the team.
- Contribute to business development by supporting bids, proposals, and client presentations related to sustainability and carbon services.
Key Requirements
- Proven experience in a sustainability consultancy or similar role with a focus on embodied and whole life carbon.
- Strong practical experience using carbon assessment tools and methodologies for buildings and/or infrastructure.
- Demonstrable track record delivering BREEAM assessments on live projects.
- Ability to interpret and apply relevant standards, guidance, and best practice on carbon and sustainable design.
- Confident communicator able to engage with clients, design teams, and contractors in a hybrid working environment.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate data into clear recommendations and strategies.
Desirable Skills
- Experience with other sustainability rating systems (e. g. LEED, HQM) or net zero carbon frameworks.
- Knowledge of circular economy principles and sustainable materials specification.
- Experience contributing to sustainability strategies, ESG reporting, or corporate sustainability initiatives.
- Familiarity with digital tools for lifecycle assessment and building performance analysis.
Qualifications
- Degree in a relevant discipline such as Sustainability, Environmental Engineering, Building Services, Architecture, or related field.
- Professional membership or working towards membership of a relevant body (e. g. IEMA, CIBSE, RICS, ICE) preferred.
- BREEAM Assessor or AP accreditation (or equivalent) strongly preferred.
- Additional training or certification in embodied carbon, whole life carbon, or lifecycle assessment is an advantage.
