A friendly and progressive general practice is looking for a motivated Healthcare Assistant (HCA) to join its multidisciplinary primary care team.

Role Summary

As a Healthcare Assistant, you will work under the guidance of registered clinicians (Practice Nurses, GPs, and Clinical Leads) to provide essential nursing support and patient care.

Your role will combine hands-on clinical work with health promotion, patient education, and administrative duties, helping ensure patients receive compassionate, efficient, and safe care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support clinical staff in the delivery of high-quality care and treatment

  • Carry out clinical procedures including:

    • Phlebotomy (blood taking)

    • Blood pressure, height, weight, and BMI checks

    • ECG recording

    • Urinalysis and sample collection

    • Wound care and dressing changes (as trained)

    • New patient health checks and NHS Health Checks

    • Flu and COVID vaccinations (with training/competency)

  • Prepare and maintain clinical rooms, equipment, and stock levels

  • Accurately record clinical data on patient systems (e.g. EMIS or SystmOne)

  • Support chronic disease monitoring through data collection and observations

  • Deliver lifestyle advice and promote self-care in areas such as weight management, smoking cessation, and diet

  • Work collaboratively with the wider clinical team to improve patient outcomes and experience

  • Adhere to infection control, safeguarding, confidentiality, and health & safety policies

  • Participate in audits, meetings, and training as required

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Experience working as a Healthcare Assistant (in primary care, hospital, or community setting)

  • Relevant care or clinical qualification (e.g. NVQ Level 2/3 in Health & Social Care or equivalent)

  • Competent in phlebotomy, blood pressure measurement, and ECGs

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Compassionate, reliable, and patient-focused

  • Strong organisational skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team

  • Commitment to continuous learning and high clinical standards

Desirable:

  • Experience within a GP or primary care setting

  • Trained in flu or COVID vaccination delivery

  • Familiarity with EMIS Web or SystmOne

  • Knowledge of infection prevention and control (IPC) practices

  • Understanding of QOF and primary care targets
