Key Responsibilities
- Support and work alongside the Registered Manager in the effective management of the children’s home.
- Support with the management of the home’s budget and resources.
- Lead, support and develop the staff team to deliver high-quality, person-centred care.
- Support the development of staff through regular supervision, appraisal and ongoing training.
- Assist with the development and review of placement plans, risk assessments and positive handling plans.
- Ensure the home operates in accordance with its Statement of Purpose and Function.
- Promote positive outcomes for each young person through a therapeutic and activity-based approach.
- Ensure staff understand and comply with relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
- Maintain a strong understanding of the Children’s Homes Regulations 2015, Quality Standards and SCCIF.
- Support the Registered Manager in addressing recommendations and actions arising from Ofsted inspections.
- Ensure safeguarding procedures are followed in line with relevant legislation and local authority procedures.
- Ensure significant events, incidents, important changes and physical interventions are appropriately reported.
- Work closely with social workers, families and other multi-agency professionals.
- Ensure children’s individual social, emotional, psychological, educational, cultural, physical and healthcare needs are met.
- Support the day-to-day running of the home and work on shift when required.
- Ensure health and safety, fire regulations and quality assurance requirements are maintained.
- Monitor and address actions arising from Regulation 44 reports and internal quality assurance processes.
- Act as a positive role model for both staff and young people.
- Participate in the on-call system.
- Ensure all mandatory training is completed within required timescales.
- Promote a positive, safe and nurturing environment for children and young people.
- What We’re Looking For
- Experience working with children and young people, ideally within a children’s residential care setting.
- Experience supporting children with social, emotional and mental health needs.
- Previous experience in a Deputy Manager or Senior role within residential childcare is desirable.
- Experience of line managing staff, including conducting supervisions, is desirable.
- Level 3 Qualification in Children’s Residential Care or equivalent.
- Level 5 Qualification in Leadership & Management for Children’s Services, or willingness to work towards it, is desirable.
- Strong knowledge of child protection and safeguarding.
- Understanding of the mental health needs of children and young people.
- Knowledge of the Children Act and Children’s Homes Regulations is desirable.
- Understanding of therapeutic approaches to childcare is desirable.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong organisational skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to build positive relationships and support positive change.
- Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information.
- Calm, approachable, adaptable and non-judgemental approach.
- Resilience when working in challenging situations.
