Salary & Package:

About the Role:

Work as a mechanical fitter, maintenance engineer, on the Mobile Maintenance Train Fleet—specialist, self-contained workshop trains used across the UK rail network. These units combine:

  • Mechanical systems (engines, compressors, gearboxes)
  • Electrical systems (control panels, diagnostics)
  • Hydraulic & pneumatic systems
  • Onboard computerised maintenance systems

This is a depot-based and field-based role, covering the Romford and surrounding depots, offering hands-on engineering work on a highly specialised fleet.

Work Pattern & Rota:

  • 10-week rolling rota
  • 400 hours across 10 weeks
  • A mix of days and some nights (night shift is more of a monitoring role as the fleet will be operating, so you will be on standby)
  • 2-week fixed working block
  • Remaining weeks include planned rest days and flexibility for leave
  • Shifts include days, nights, weekends, etc.
  • Large blocks of scheduled time off throughout the year

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out planned maintenance and inspections on the fleet
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic faults
  • Maintain onboard systems (power, lighting, air systems)
  • Use digital maintenance systems to record work
  • Conduct audits of tools, spares, and equipment
  • Support testing and operation of units
  • Ensure all work meets safety and engineering standards

Requirements:

Essential:

  • NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • Strong fault-finding skills
  • Full UK Driving Licence
  • Clean criminal record (DBS required)
  • Ability to pass medical and drug & alcohol screening
  • Safety-conscious and detail-focused

Desirable:

  • Rail/plant/HGV/industrial experience
  • Ex-forces engineering background (REME, RAF, Marine, etc.)
  • Electrical bias (preferred but not essential)
  • Engineering backgrounds considered: Rail vehicle maintenance, Automotive/HGV/plant, Aerospace, Industrial maintenance
