The Opportunity

We are recruiting an experienced Warehouse Manager for a growing business operating within the commercial building materials sector.

This is a newly created role offering the opportunity to take full ownership of a busy warehouse operation, lead an expanding team and help shape how the department develops.

The environment is fast-paced and hands-on, handling large and bulky materials rather than small parcels. You will oversee goods-in, stock control, cutting operations, picking, loading and housekeeping, ensuring everything runs safely, efficiently and on time.

Around 75% of your time will be spent on the warehouse floor, with the remainder dedicated to administration, reporting and improvements.

We are looking for a confident, decisive manager who sets clear standards, tackles issues directly and ensures procedures are followed consistently.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership

  • Lead and motivate the warehouse team, including line management of the Warehouse Supervisor.

  • Set and enforce standards for attendance, punctuality, performance, conduct and PPE.

  • Recruit, train and develop team members as the operation grows.

  • Set weekly targets, monitor KPIs and address under performance.

  • Provide regular operational updates to senior management.

Warehouse Operations and Stock

  • Plan and coordinate cutting schedules, picking and order preparation.

  • Ensure materials are processed accurately and loads are ready on time.

  • Oversee goods-in, delivery checks, documentation and stock locations.

  • Maintain effective stock rotation and minimise waste and offcuts.

  • Take ownership of stock control, stocktakes and record accuracy.

  • Keep warehouse systems and spreadsheets up to date.

Health, Safety and Housekeeping

  • Take responsibility for health and safety across the warehouse and external yard.

  • Enforce PPE requirements and safe working practices.

  • Identify and resolve hazards promptly.

  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organisation and housekeeping.

Continuous Improvement

  • Develop clear reporting and monitor warehouse performance.

  • Review procedures and identify improvements to efficiency and productivity.

  • Establish consistent working practices and contribute ideas as the business grows.

What We're Looking For

Essential:

  • Proven experience managing a warehouse team and day-to-day operations.

  • A strong, decisive leadership style and the confidence to enforce standards.

  • A hands-on approach and willingness to work alongside the team.

  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.

  • Experience of stock control, goods-in, picking and warehouse operations.

  • Competence with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.

  • Full, valid UK driving licence.

Desirable:

  • Counterbalance or reach forklift truck licence.

  • IOSH or NEBOSH qualification.

  • Experience in flooring, construction, building materials or bulky goods.

  • Experience developing warehouse KPIs and reporting processes.

Practical experience and management ability are more important than formal qualifications.

Salary and Benefits

  • £35,000-£45,000 salary, depending on experience.

  • Company vehicle.

  • Monday to Friday, 5:00am-2:00pm.

  • 20 days' holiday plus bank holidays.

  • Paid day off for your birthday.

  • Company pension with 4% employer contribution.

  • Death-in-service benefit worth four times basic salary.

  • Income protection covering 80% of basic salary after six months' service, subject to scheme terms.

  • Uniform and PPE provided.

  • Ongoing training and development.

  • Monthly team bonus opportunity of 2-5%, linked to performance and scheme conditions.

  • Weekly recognition awards and regular team lunches.
