Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the preparation and submission of rulings, declarations, and claims to HMRC.
  • Commission, review, and interpret advice from leading tax counsel and specialist advisers.
  • Collaborate closely with direct tax, transfer pricing, and wider tax colleagues to ensure VAT advice is aligned with broader commercial and tax considerations.
  • Provide specialist support across a range of areas, including quarterly corporation tax instalment processes, organisational relief planning, settlements and elections with HMRC, preparation of reporting entities, and oversight of tax ledger management and reconciliation.
  • Deliver high‑level technical guidance on complex VAT matters, assessing VAT risk across major projects, transactions, and business structures.
  • Support the management of the organisation’s indirect tax relationship with HMRC and other fiscal authorities.
  • Drive optimisation of the organisation’s VAT recovery position.
  • Provide accurate VAT inputs for statutory accounting and reporting requirements.
  • Advise on operational processes and systems to ensure VAT data is robust, accurate, and fit for reporting and compliance.
  • Partner with commercial teams to provide VAT guidance across both the supply and receipt of goods and services.
  • Line manage and develop a team of two VAT professionals.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • Deep technical VAT expertise, ideally gained within a partially exempt business environment.
  • Financial Services experience strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years’ total experience in VAT or indirect tax roles.
