Are you a seasoned Lead Developer ready to step up and take real ownership of API strategy, architecture, and delivery? Do you thrive in environments where your voice matters, your decisions have impact, and your ability to drive efficiency is not just welcomed—but essential?
I’m representing a highly respected organisation in the medical technology space that is scaling its digital product ecosystem. They are investing heavily in modernising and expanding their digital platforms, and they need a Lead API Developer who can steer backend/API development with both technical authority and clear communication.
This isn’t just another coding role. This is your opportunity to influence architecture, modernise processes, mentor engineers, and play a pivotal role in shaping a suite of products used globally.
The Role: Lead API Developer
You’ll be the technical lead responsible for the development and long-term maintenance of the company’s API and backend services. Working alongside designers, product owners, IT teams, and infrastructure specialists, you’ll set standards, own architecture decisions, and ensure the team delivers reliable, secure, scalable digital products.
This role suits someone who has already been a lead developer—someone who is proactive, strategic, and unafraid to make decisions. Communication is key: you’ll be the bridge between technical detail and business clarity.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Lead & Deliver - Own API architecture, design patterns, and engineering standards. Make final technical decisions and document them clearly (ADRs, rationale, governance).
- Plan & Drive Efficiency - Support scoping and planning for new digital features and products. Provide accurate delivery timelines and manage expectations with stakeholders. Set clear sprint goals and unblock teams quickly.
- Build & Maintain - Develop and maintain backend services across multiple digital products. Enforce code quality, improve reliability, and support secure data handling aligned to GDPR/UK GDPR. Define and meet SLAs/SLOs around availability, latency, and error rates.
- Safety, Security & Compliance - Work closely with IT and infrastructure teams to ensure secure and well-managed environments. Lead safe releases, API versioning strategies, and deprecation policies.
- Mentor & Elevate - Coach engineers in architecture, performance tuning, and pragmatic delivery. Lead design reviews, knowledge-sharing, and promote a culture of technical excellence.
What We’re Looking For
- Essential Experience - Proven experience as a Lead Developer or similar senior technical role. Strong communicator who can turn complexity into clarity. Deep expertise in RESTful API design and scalable backend engineering. Strong experience with .NET Core/.NET Framework. Proficiency with unit and integration testing. Hands-on experience with API documentation tools (Swagger/OpenAPI). Understanding of versioning and backwards compatibility strategies. Exposure to CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, Jenkins etc.).
- Core Competencies - Strategic thinker with strong analytical skills. Decisive, pragmatic, and accountable. Able to build strong relationships across technical and non-technical teams. Ownership mindset—quality, reliability, and long-term thinking matter to you.
Why This Role? Join a company building technology that genuinely makes a difference. Have real architectural influence instead of fighting legacy decisions. Work with leaders who value clarity, accountability, and technical craftsmanship. A role where you’re empowered to drive efficiency and establish best-in-class practices.
