A major UK infrastructure programme is seeking a skilled Industrial Relations Specialist on a full time hybrid basis to support the implementation of collective agreements and promote constructive collaboration across a large, multi-employer workforce.
The role plays a vital part in maintaining a stable industrial relations environment to protect delivery schedules and ensure effective engagement among contractors, trade unions and internal stakeholders. Working within a complex project setting, the post holder will develop strong working relationships across site teams, partner organisations and supply chain representatives. They will provide practical support and guidance to ensure consistent understanding and application of agreements, identify emerging issues, and help maintain a cohesive and solutions-focused approach to industrial relations.
Key Responsibilities
- The specialist will work closely with the Industrial Relations Manager to implement the project's IR strategy, supporting positive engagement with contractors, trade unions and wider stakeholders.
- They will lead ad hoc IR-related projects that prepare the organisation for full agreement implementation.
- Responsibilities include designing and delivering practical IR training, developing materials, coordinating logistics and ensuring accurate participation records.
- They will contribute expert input into operational guidance documents, ensuring collective agreements are translated into clear and workable site practices.
- The role includes supporting the application of Transitional Arrangements and Minimum Standards, resolving routine queries and escalating matters only where required.
- The post holder will collaborate with contractor IR managers to identify issues early and support joint resolution strategies to minimise the risk of industrial action.
- They will provide informed consultancy on individual and collective matters, drawing on employment law, best practice and sound commercial judgement.
- Additional duties include producing clear communications, maintaining IR reporting and workforce data, coordinating audit and assurance activities, and managing day-to-day relationships with trade unions at local, regional and national levels.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Essential requirements include a working knowledge of trade union structures, employment law fundamentals and general HR/IR processes.
- Candidates should demonstrate strong communication skills, the ability to build relationships across multiple organisations, and a solution-driven approach with solid project management capability.
- Experience in industrial relations or generalist HR roles, including exposure to grievances, conflict resolution and large-scale change programmes, is required, as is proficiency with Microsoft applications.
- Desirable attributes include CIPD qualification (or equivalent experience), familiarity with transient workforces, and experience within complex operational environments such as construction or engineering.
