We’re supporting a unique scientific instruments manufacturer in their search for a Research and Development Manager. This is a rare opportunity to join an innovative business with an outstanding reputation in climate, agricultural and environmental research. Based on-site, you will lead a skilled, multi-disciplinary team responsible for driving R&D innovation and delivering a pipeline of new product development. About the role:

As Research and Development Manager, you will oversee the planning, execution and delivery of all R&D activities, ensuring projects align with the business’s strategic goals. You will manage a team of engineers, scientists, and technical support staff, focusing on new product development, continuous improvement and the extension of legacy product lifecycles. This is a hands-on leadership role combining technical involvement with people and project management.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop the R&D function in line with business strategy and co-operative values
  • Manage new product development from concept to launch, ensuring time, cost and performance targets are met
  • Oversee resource planning, budgeting and cross-functional collaboration for technical projects
  • Provide technical input in your area of expertise, supporting both innovation and product refinement
  • Contribute to long-term product strategy and innovation planning
  • Ensure products remain compliant, manufacturable and in line with industry standards

About you:

  • Proven background in R&D or engineering leadership roles, ideally in a small to mid-sized technical or scientific business
  • Degree-qualified in a relevant technical discipline, with hands-on experience in product development
  • Confident managing multi-disciplinary teams and balancing multiple technical priorities
  • Excellent understanding of the full product development lifecycle and innovation strategy
  • Collaborative communicator with strong people and project management skills
  • Familiarity with scientific instrumentation, compliance and IP is advantageous
