Role Overview

We are looking for a Design Manager to manage industrial heat pump systems projects and to lead the design and delivery of complex heating decarbonisation projects. This role will take ownership of projects from feasibility and concept design through to commissioning and handover, ensuring optimal system performance, compliance, and client satisfaction. You will play a critical role in integrating heat pumps into existing industrial processes and infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

Project Leadership

  • Lead end-to-end delivery of industrial heat pump projects (typically large-scale, complex systems)
  • Manage project programmes, budgets, and risk
  • Oversee procurement, contractor coordination, and installation activities
  • Act as the main point of contact for clients and stakeholders

Design Management

  • Lead and drive the technical design of industrial heat pump systems, including system sizing, configuration, and integration
  • Review and approve designs including:
  • Hydraulic schematics
  • Plant room layouts
  • Heat load calculations
  • Control strategies
  • Ensure compatibility with existing heating systems, manufacturing processes, and site constraints

Technical Engineering Oversight

  • Assess site energy demands, temperature profiles, and process heating requirements
  • Optimise system efficiency (COP), performance, and lifecycle cost
  • Support selection of appropriate technologies (air source, water source, ground source heat pumps)
  • Lead technical input into feasibility studies and client proposals

Stakeholder Client Management

  • Work closely with clients to understand operational requirements and constraints
  • Present technical solutions in a clear, commercially viable manner
  • Coordinate with consultants, M&E contractors, and equipment suppliers

Compliance Standards

  • Ensure all designs comply with UK regulations and standards, including:
  • Building Regulations
  • F-Gas requirements
  • Health Safety standards
  • Support funding applications (e.g., government decarbonisation schemes where applicable)
  • Maintain detailed technical documentation and project records

Key Requirements

Essential

  • Proven experience in similar industrial projects or large-scale heat pump projects
  • Strong background in mechanical/piping engineering, HVAC etc
  • Ability to perform or review heat load calculations and system sizing
  • Experience integrating systems into live industrial environments
  • Strong project management experience (multi-project environment preferred)

Desirable

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Piping Engineering or related discipline
  • Experience designing or managing:
  • Heat pump systems
  • District heating or process heating systems
  • Experience with process heating in manufacturing or industrial sectors
  • Knowledge of low-carbon funding schemes and decarbonisation strategies
