We are seeking a highly experienced and committed Consultant in Learning Disabilities Psychiatry to join our NHS client in Northampton, Northamptonshire. This full-time role involves providing expert psychiatric care to individuals with intellectual disabilities and complex mental health needs, with responsibilities under the Mental Health Act as a Section 12 Approved Clinician.
Key Responsibilities- Provide clinical leadership and psychiatric care for individuals with learning disabilities and associated mental health conditions
- Act as an Approved Clinician and hold Section 12 approval, undertaking responsibilities related to detention, treatment, and discharge planning under the Mental Health Act
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, diagnoses, and treatment planning
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including nursing, psychology, social care, and primary care professionals
- Supervise and support junior medical staff and trainees
- Participate in service development, clinical governance, and quality improvement initiatives
- Engage with families, carers, and external agencies to ensure holistic, person-centred care
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Inclusion on the Specialist Register for Psychiatry of Learning Disabilities (or within 6 months of CCT)
- MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
- Section 12 approval and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility to obtain)
- Extensive experience in learning disabilities psychiatry and multidisciplinary team working
- Strong leadership, communication, and clinical decision-making skills
