A midwife provides care and support to women and their families throughout pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. Some roles and responsibilities you will undertake include:

  • Monitor women and their babies during and after pregnancy
  • Support women and their families, facilitating classes for pregnancy and parenting
  • Manage labour and perform delivery of babies during birth
  • Identify and manage risks to mother and baby

A midwife’s salary in the UK starts at £28,407 on band 5. After completing a 12 to 18-month preceptorship, they immediately move to a band 6 salary, starting at £35,392. A consultant midwife on band 8b-8c can earn between £55,000–66,000. Courses you could complete include: Any midwifery university course or apprenticeship needs to be approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.   • Postgraduate midwifery degree - 1-2 years
  • Midwife level 6 degree apprenticeship - 3 years
