Kingfisher ward is a 16 bedded children’s unit caring for babies and young children who require medical investigations and tests. Some patients are seen as day cases, while others are admitted for one night or more. If a child is coming to Kingfisher Ward, this admission will have been planned with a clear idea of the investigations they need. The ward is a family focused environment for children and their families; with the aim of providing high quality, evidence-based care. Our philosophy of care is family centred and encompasses multi-disciplinary working in a friendly and supportive environment. There are opportunities for staff to gain experience and skills in cannulation and phlebotomy.

Majority of tests carried out on Kingfisher ware include blood and hormone tests, tests on suspected or known endocrine, metabolic, renal, neurology, dermatology, rheumatology, gastroenterology or urology disorders.

Children on Kingfisher Ward are cared for by a large multi-disciplinary team which includes highly qualified nurses and clinical nurse specialists, specialist medical colleagues, physiotherapists, pharmacists, healthcare assistants, play specialists and house-keeping staff.
