This is a permanent role based on-site at Pulsant\'s Reading East data centre. Monday to Friday working hours with rotating shifts between 7am‑3.30pm and 10.30am‑7pm. The Data Centre Engineer is the on‑ground remote hands performing software and hardware tasks along with cabling support, racking and stacking server equipment. The engineer will greet customers, check ID/security requirements and provide a positive visit experience. The role is on‑call every second week and must reach the data centre within 1 hour at all times including night incidents.
Key responsibilities:
- Respond to customers within agreed SLA.
- Deliver intelligent remote hands for external and internal customers.
- Deploy racks and related equipment to support customer orders.
- Manage all incoming calls, tickets, emails and faxes to the data centre services function.
- Proactive update customers and resolution of service.
- Follow escalation processes; tickets to support management and other teams as required.
- Liaise with third party suppliers to report and elevate customer problems.
- Access management to site where no security function is available.
- Cabling support including crimping, patching, labelling, running and terminating.
- Troubleshoot hardware faults and arrange replacements.
- Install and decommission redundant equipment and cabling.
- Co‑operate and work closely with all members of the DC and wider operational teams to ensure efficient, productive and high‑quality service to customers within the Pulsant live Data Centre.
- Stock control of Pulsant assets and store management.
- Manage, categorise and prioritise all relevant tickets; these include problems, queries and requests regarding Pulsant services.
- Support trainee DC engineers when required.
- Monitoring of infrastructure, site walk‑around checks and reporting / escalating any faults or concerns as required.
What / who we’re looking for:
- Experience working in a data centre is highly desirable but not essential.
- Experience working with / troubleshooting computer hardware and / or laying cables.
- Keen interest in and passion for IT technology and infrastructure.
- Computer literate, with experience of the Microsoft suite including Word and Excel.
- Customer service and strong communication skills.
- Ability to work well to deadlines and under pressure.
- Good problem solving skills.
