About the Role

Great British Energy is looking for a Construction Manager to join our GBE Onshore Wind Team. This role will play a key part in contributing to projects, objectives, and wider organisational goals.

Key Responsibilities

Please note the points covered below are indicative and may not apply to all contracts. Also note that there will be a requirement to spend time on site over a prolonged period, depending on the relevant project phase.

  • Site Delivery & Construction Management
  • Lead day-to-day construction activities across:
    • Civil works (roads, foundations, drainage)
    • Electrical infrastructure (cabling, substations, ICP works)
    • Turbine / PV / BESS installation
  • Coordinate contractors and subcontractors on site
  • Ensure delivery in line with design specifications and programme
  • Monitor productivity, quality, and sequencing of works
  • Health, Safety & CDM Compliance
  • Act as Client representative on site under CDM 2015
  • Ensure Principal Contractor compliance with:
    • Construction Phase Plan
    • RAMS (Risk Assessments & Method Statements)
  • Lead site HSE culture and zero-harm initiatives
  • Conduct audits, inspections, and incident investigations
  • Contractor & Interface Management
  • Manage multiple contractors (BoP, OEM, ICP, civils) in conjunction with the Delivery Project Manager and Delivery Commercial Manager
  • Coordinate with key interfaces:
    • Civil ↔ Electrical
    • Turbine / PV installation ↔ grid connection
  • Represent Client at daily/weekly site coordination meetings
  • Programme Management
  • Support Delivery against the integrated construction schedule
  • Track progress against agreed milestones
  • Identify delays and potential mitigation measures
  • Provide accurate progress reporting to Delivery Project Manager
  • Quality Assurance & Technical Oversight
  • Ensure works are delivered in accordance with specification and contract
  • Oversee inspections, testing, and commissioning preparation
  • Manage defects rectification process and lists
  • Ensure proper documentation and accuracy of as-built records
  • Commercial & Cost Awareness
  • Working with the Delivery Project Manager and Delivery Commercial Manager:
    • Monitor site progress against cost plan
    • Identify and flag variations and change orders
    • Support commercial team in assessing contractor claims
    • Ensure efficient use of resources and materials on site
  • Environmental & Planning Compliance
  • Ensure adherence to:
    • Planning conditions
    • Environmental management plans
    • Ecology and access restrictions
  • Manage site impacts (noise, dust, traffic, water) in line with the above
  • Liaise with Environmental Clerks of Work and Archaeological Clerks or Works as required
  • Commissioning & Handover
  • Support commissioning activities and energisation
  • Ensure readiness for grid connection and testing
  • Oversee completion and handover to Asset Management:
    • Snagging completion
    • Final documentation
    • Assist through Defects Liability Period (DLP)

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Demonstrably significant construction experience (energy or infrastructure)
  • Proven delivery experience on Onshore wind, Solar PV, or BESS projects
  • Exemplary Safety Behaviour and experience in managing safety systems
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Site construction practices
    • CDM 2015 regulations
    • Contractor management
  • Experience working under:
    • EPC or multi-contract delivery models
  • Strong leadership and problem-solving capability
  • SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme)

Desirable:

  • Experience with:
    • Substations and grid connection works
    • Turbine erection or PV installation
    • Familiarity with NEC contracts
    • Familiarity with FIDIC contracts
    • Temporary works management experience
    • Degree / HNC in Engineering, Construction, or related field
    • CSCS card (Manager level)
    • First Aid certification
    • LANTRA Off Road Vehicle Operating (4X4) training.
