On behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, we are looking for a Senior Infrastructure Engineer (Inside IR35) for a 9‑month contract based Hybrid in either West Cumbria or Warrington office two days per week.
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) is a non‑departmental public body created through the Energy Act 2004.
We have five offices across the UK—in Cumbria, Dounreay, Harwell, Warrington and London—as well as seventeen sites, including the first fleet of nuclear power stations, research centres, fuel‑related facilities, and Sellafield, which hosts the largest radioactive inventory and the most complex facilities to decommission.
We are sponsored by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and supported by Dounreay, Magnox, Nuclear Waste Services, Nuclear Transport Solutions and Sellafield.
The Scottish Government also has a governance role, working closely with DESNZ to ensure its expectations are met.
Our role is strategic: we establish the overall approach, allocate budgets, set targets and monitor progress.
We do not have a hands‑on role in cleaning up our facilities; instead, we deliver our mission through others, primarily 12 businesses.
Responsibilities
- Decommissioning and cleaning up nuclear facilities, ensuring safe management of all waste products, both radioactive and non‑radioactive.
- Implementing policy on the long‑term management of nuclear waste.
- Developing UK‑wide strategy and plans for nuclear Low Level Waste (LLW).
- Scrutinising the decommissioning plans of EDF Energy, owners of the operating fleet of Advanced Gas Cooled Reactor (AGR) nuclear power stations.
- Senior Infrastructure Engineer Duties
- Oversee networks, servers, cloud platforms and security protocols.
- Deliver infrastructure upgrades, optimisations and migrations.
- Work with third‑party suppliers to ensure current technology stacks—including servers, network and cloud services—are maintained.
- Define and implement technical standards and controls for on‑premises and cloud environments.
- Ensure cloud and on‑premises environments comply with the NDA’s security policies.
- Provide input to architecture and designs.
- Ensure design integrity and compliance, reviewing and approving supplier proposals, technical designs and solution architectures.
- Manage risks across NDA IT technology assets.
- Support performance, resilience, lifecycle and incident‑response improvements.
- Collaborate with stakeholders such as Cyber Team, Enterprise Architecture, Information Governance and relevant external agencies.
Essential Qualifications
- Active Security Clearance (SC) required.
- Experience with on‑prem and cloud environments, particularly Azure.
- Previous cyber security experience.
- Experience working with Managed Service Providers (MSP’s).
Please be aware that this role can only be worked within the UK and not overseas.
Disability Confident
As a member of the Disability Confident Scheme, NDA guarantees to interview all candidates who have a disability and who meet all the essential criteria for the vacancy.
In cases where we have a high volume of candidates with a disability who meet all the essential criteria, we will interview the best candidates from within that group.
This scheme encourages candidates with a disability and/or neurodivergence to apply.
In exceptional circumstances, we may also need to apply the desirable criteria in our shortlisting process, which may include holding active security clearance.
Armed Forces Covenant
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority guarantees to interview veterans or spouses/partners of military personnel who meet all the essential criteria for the vacancy.
In cases where we have a high volume of ex‑military candidates or military spouses/partners who meet all the essential criteria, we will interview the best candidates from within that group.
In exceptional circumstances, we may also need to apply the desirable criteria in our shortlisting process, which may include holding active security clearance.
