On behalf of DWP, we are looking for a SAS Data Engineer for a 12‑month (Inside IR35) hybrid contract based up to 3 days per week in Manchester, Blackpool, Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield or Newcastle. SC Clearance is an essential requirement for this role; you must be willing and eligible for security checks. Due to the exceptional requirements, preference may be given to candidates who meet all essential criteria and hold active security clearance.

Data Engineers create and maintain analytics infrastructure, laying the foundation for data needs. They develop, construct, maintain and test architectures (e.g., databases and large‑scale processing systems), implement data flows to connect operational systems, and write and execute ETL scripts and code. As a SAS Data Engineer you will develop accurate, efficient data solutions that meet customer needs and agreed timescales. You ensure stability, robustness and resilience of your designs, effect changes where necessary, support continuous improvement, and provide leadership to develop Associate Data Engineers and other data‑engineering functions for customers.

Responsibilities

  • Translate business requirements so they are clear, robust, and can be transformed into reusable, production‑ready code or effective data models.
  • Define version control mechanisms and strategies for the source code of products.
  • Support Quality Assurance colleagues and Data Managers with day‑to‑day testing and live running of data products and services.
  • Shape solutions in a fit‑for‑purpose way, following agreed principles and contributing to the overall Data Engineer Development lifecycle.
  • Perform data profiling and quality measurements.
  • Design and develop reusable metadata libraries.
  • Own the stability of new products, ensuring ongoing robustness, resilience and stability.
  • Identify, manage and resolve issues preventing delivery or continuous development of products.
  • Support the growth of the team by keeping abreast of market and industry trends and sharing knowledge and experience.

Technical Skills

  • Design, develop, test, correct and document simple programs or scripts under guidance.
  • Communicate findings appropriately and give tactical recommendations.
  • Identify simple patterns and trends, investigate problems and opportunities in existing processes, and recommend solutions.
  • Understand core technical concepts related to the role and apply them.
