On behalf of AWE, we are looking for a Production Planner for an 18 months contract based full time in Reading. What if you could work on something that you can't test but cannot afford to fail? Something that could have spent years on a submarine, is launched into outer space (where the temperature is below -250c), comes hurtling through the atmosphere, being heated up and shaken and then must work? Some challenge. That's exactly what the team of over 6,500 people at AWE do every day delivering important work, in support of the most important mission - keeping the nation safe.
AWE plays a crucial role in national nuclear security. Their role in nuclear deterrence and their specialist technical assistance to nuclear threat reduction is vital in the defence against the most serious threats faced by the UK. Working to support the defence of our country, AWE has a clear mission to keep everyone, the environment, their products and information, sites, and everything around them, safe and secure.
As a Production Planner, your main responsibilities will be to:
- Detail plan methods of manufacture in response to tasking requirements with full regard to time, cost and quality.
- Ensure local MRP system is updated and accurate.
- Demonstrate and use 'Lean Planning' techniques and 'Production Control' processes such as visual management, Kanban and Push/Pull in the operational/manufacturing areas.
- Proactively tackle blocks and barriers to progress.
- Respond positively to the needs of internal and external customers.
Essential Skills:
- Proven experience in production planning within a manufacturing or precision engineering environment.
- Engineering background (Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Precision Engineering) with a strong understanding of machining processes, manufacturing routes, and shop floor operations.
- Experience managing material availability, supplier deliveries, purchase orders, and production schedules, with the ability to reforecast plans in response to supply chain challenges.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across supply chain, operations, manufacturing teams, suppliers, and customer-facing functions.
- Good computer literacy and planning/reporting skills, with experience tracking production performance, analysing forecasts, and delivering accurate updates to internal and external stakeholders.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience in SAP and ERP systems.
