About the Role

Great British Energy is looking for a Transaction Lead to join our Local Power Plan team. This role will play a key part in contributing to projects, objectives, and wider organisational goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end transaction execution for local and community energy opportunities, including direct investments (equity, quasi-equity, loans) and investments via third parties (e.g., community energy groups, local authority vehicles, developers, funds or aggregators).
  • Originate and screen opportunities in partnership with GBE local customer team; shape propositions that balance pace, risk, and community benefit.
  • Structure transactions, including governance, security, cashflow waterfalls, covenants, consents, and social value requirements; ensure alignment with subsidy control, state aid legacy considerations (where relevant), procurement, and public sector approvals.
  • Lead commercial negotiations with counterparties and support drafting of term sheets, heads of terms, shareholder/loan agreements, development services agreements, and associated side letters.
  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary due diligence (commercial, financial, legal, technical, ESG) with internal teams and external advisors; identify key risks and agree mitigations and conditions precedent.
  • Build and maintain an investment pipeline and execution plan; manage transaction timetables, workstreams, and decision gates through to close and handover to asset management/delivery.
  • Prepare clear, evidence-based papers for internal governance (including Investment Committee), recommending deal structures and terms and evidencing alignment with GBE strategic objectives.
  • Support development of repeatable products and templates (e.g., standard terms, community benefit principles, investment criteria) to enable scalable deployment across local areas.
  • Act as a trusted partner to local authorities and communities, helping translate complex commercial concepts into practical options and supporting capacity-building where needed.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Strong track record of executing transactions in energy, infrastructure, project finance or corporate finance, including leading negotiations and coordinating advisers through to financial close.
  • Experience structuring investments across equity and debt instruments (or equivalent), with a practical understanding of risk allocation, security packages, covenants, conditions precedent and closing mechanics.
  • Ability to work effectively with local authorities, community organisations and SMEs, adapting communication and deal processes to diverse counterparties while maintaining commercial rigour.
  • Strong analytical capability, including reviewing and challenging financial models and key commercial assumptions; able to distil complex issues into clear recommendations for governance forums.
  • Working knowledge of UK power markets and local energy project fundamentals (e.g., solar PV, onshore wind, heat networks, flexibility, storage, EV infrastructure), including typical revenue models and delivery risks.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ESG and public value outcomes, including social value, community benefit, affordability and just transition considerations.

Desirable:

  • Experience with local authority finance, community energy models, or place-based investment vehicles (e.g., joint ventures, portfolio/SPV platforms, fund structures).
  • Understanding of subsidy control/procurement considerations in a public sector context and experience working within (or alongside) formal governance and assurance processes.
  • Experience building repeatable transaction products, templates or playbooks to scale deployment across multiple sites/counterparties.

Qualifications

  • Degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline (e.g., finance, economics, engineering, law).
  • A professional qualification (e.g., ACA/ACCA/CFA/CIIA) desirable.

Personal Qualities

  • Takes ownership, shows confidence in decision-making, and is willing to challenge constructively.
  • Focuses on delivering meaningful outcomes and making a positive, lasting impact.
  • Works collaboratively, valuing different perspectives and building inclusive relationships.
