You’ll manage a varied portfolio of clients, deliver expert VAT advice, and work on complex, high-value projects alongside a collaborative national tax team.
The Role
As Tax Manager (VAT & Indirect Tax), you’ll provide high-quality technical advice and compliance support to clients across a range of industries. You’ll manage day-to-day client relationships, lead advisory assignments, and play an important role in supporting the growth of the firm’s VAT and Indirect Tax offering across the North East.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing a portfolio of VAT and indirect tax clients, ensuring excellent service delivery
- Providing technical VAT advice on a range of matters including land and property transactions, cross-border trade, and partial exemption
- Leading and supporting advisory projects including acquisitions, restructures, and due diligence work
- Reviewing VAT compliance and helping clients manage VAT risk and efficiency
- Liaising with HMRC on behalf of clients and handling enquiries or disputes
- Building and maintaining trusted client relationships, offering clear and commercial advice
- Assisting in the development and training of junior team members
- Collaborating with other teams and departments across the firm to identify cross-service opportunities
About You
You’ll be a proactive, confident VAT professional who enjoys variety, challenge, and client interaction. You will:
- Be CTA and/or ACA/ACCA qualified, or have equivalent VAT-focused experience.
- Have at least 5 years’ experience in VAT or indirect tax within practice or HMRC.
- Possess strong technical knowledge of UK VAT legislation and international VAT principles.
- Be commercially aware and confident delivering practical, business-led tax solutions.
- Have experience managing your own portfolio of clients and advisory projects.
- Be an excellent communicator, capable of explaining complex issues clearly.
- Be highly organised with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Enjoy working as part of a collaborative and supportive team.
Experience with land and property VAT, partial exemption, and cross-border VAT would be particularly valuable.
