Are you an experienced bookkeeper with strong VAT knowledge and a background in supporting busy accountancy teams? A long-established and reputable accountancy practice in Grays is seeking a Bookkeeper to join its friendly and supportive team. This role has become available due to a combination of retirement and staff movement, creating a fantastic opportunity for an experienced professional looking to join a stable, client-focused firm. The ideal candidate will be hands-on, detail-oriented, and confident managing multiple bookkeeping clients while supporting the wider accounts team.
Role Responsibilities
- Preparing and submitting approximately 40 VAT returns per quarter, of which around 28 clients require bookkeeping from prime entry records
- Managing data input, reconciliation, and VAT treatment across varied client records
- Assisting the accounts team with accounts preparation for sole traders, partnerships, and limited companies
- Ensuring accurate financial data entry and file maintenance
- Liaising with clients and colleagues to collect missing information or resolve discrepancies

Candidate Requirements
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a similar role within an accountancy or business services environment
- Strong working knowledge of double-entry bookkeeping and VAT application
- Proficient in SAGE Line 50 and QuickBooks
- Familiarity with additional platforms such as CCH Accounts Production, Xero, and other bookkeeping/accounting systems is desirable
- Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills
- Able to work effectively in a busy office environment with minimal supervision
- Strong communication skills with a professional and approachable manner
