As a Complex Carer, you will provide high-quality, person-centred care for individuals with complex health needs, supporting dignity, comfort, safety, and independence. The role includes care management for multiple clinical requirements, including spinal injury (including autonomic dysreflexia), brain injury, and associated respiratory, nutritional, and elimination needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver complex care in line with the individual’s care plan, risk assessments, and agreed outcomes.
  • Support individuals with respiratory care, including:
    • Ventilation
    • Oxygen therapy
    • Tracheostomy care
    • Suctioning (including airway clearance)
    • Cough assist
  • Manage neurological and safety needs, including:
    • Seizure awareness and responding appropriately to seizure activity
    • Monitoring and escalation of changes in condition
  • Provide safe nutritional support, including:
    • PEG feeding
    • NG tube feeding (as required)
    • Positioning, checking tolerance, and maintaining feeding protocols
  • Support elimination and bowel care, including:
    • Bowel management
    • Catheter care (including monitoring, hygiene, and comfort)
  • Support safe care delivery for spinal injury, including recognising and responding to autonomic dysreflexia:
    • Monitoring symptoms and following escalation pathways immediately
  • Maintain effective communication with families, clinicians, and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Complete all required records accurately and promptly (e.g., MAR sheets, incident reports, observation charts).
  • Follow infection prevention and safeguarding procedures at all times.
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe environment, including equipment checks and adherence to manual handling practices.

Person Specification

  • Experience in complex care or clinical support (desirable).
  • Confidence and competence working with:
    • Tracheostomy
    • Ventilation and oxygen therapy
    • Suctioning and cough assist
    • PEG feeding and NG tube management
    • Catheter and bowel management
    • Seizure support
    • Autonomic dysreflexia awareness (training provided where required)
  • Strong safety focus and ability to follow protocols consistently.
  • Good observation skills and ability to escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Respectful, compassionate, and patient-focused approach.
  • Ability to work effectively within a care team and follow supervision requirements.

Training & Support

  • Full training and competency assessments will be provided where required, including:
    • Autonomic dysreflexia recognition and response
    • Tracheostomy and airway management (as appropriate)
    • Ventilation awareness and support tasks (as required)
    • Feeding tube protocols (PEG / NG)
    • Seizure response procedures
    • Equipment and safeguarding requirements

Additional Information

  • Shift pattern may include days, nights, weekends, and weekends on a rota (to be confirmed).
  • Must be willing to work in accordance with clinical guidance, individual care plans, and organisational policies.
  • Enhanced DBS may be required depending on the role setting and legal requirements.
