We are working with a leading main contractor to appoint an experienced Senior Design Manager to lead the delivery of a landmark £150m industrial scheme in Watford. This is a fully site-based role during project delivery, offering the opportunity to take ownership of a major industrial development from pre-construction through to completion. Following successful delivery, future opportunities will involve national projects across the UK portfolio.

The Role

As Senior Design Manager, you will lead and coordinate the full design process, ensuring technical excellence, programme alignment, commercial awareness, and successful project delivery. You will work closely with operational teams, consultants, subcontractors, and clients to manage design risk, drive coordination, and ensure buildability across all stages of the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design management process on a £150m industrial scheme
  • Manage consultant teams and subcontractor design packages
  • Drive design coordination between client, consultants, and delivery teams
  • Review technical drawings, specifications, and construction details
  • Ensure compliance with programme, quality, and statutory requirements
  • Identify and mitigate design and buildability risks
  • Chair design team meetings and manage RFIs and technical queries
  • Support procurement and commercial teams throughout delivery
  • Maintain strong stakeholder relationships across the project

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Senior Design Manager or Design Manager on large-scale industrial, logistics, or major build projects
  • Strong main contractor background
  • Experience delivering projects valued £50m+
  • Excellent technical and coordination skills
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong understanding of construction methodologies and building regulations
  • Degree qualified or equivalent within Construction, Architecture, or Engineering
