A leading UK construction and building services contractor is looking to appoint an experienced Senior Building Services Design Manager to join its regional pre-construction and technical team. This is a senior technical position with a strong focus on MEPH pre-construction design, technical assurance and design evaluation. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping projects during the early stages, ensuring proposed solutions are technically robust, compliant, coordinated and commercially viable before progressing into delivery. The role is primarily office-based in London, with travel across the region to support project development and pre-construction activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead MEPH technical design activities throughout tender and pre-construction stages.
- Review and challenge consultant designs to identify technical risks, omissions and coordination issues.
- Ensure designs comply with Employer's Requirements, statutory regulations and project objectives.
- Lead structured design reviews and technical audits across the relevant RIBA stages.
- Produce technical evaluation reports highlighting risks, compliance issues and required actions.
- Review MEPH strategies, plant sizing, system integration and lifecycle considerations.
- Assess thermal modelling, energy performance, Part L compliance and building performance information.
- Coordinate MEPH design input across multiple disciplines.
- Lead technical workshops and interface reviews with consultants and project teams.
- Ensure designs are practical, buildable and aligned with construction methodology, logistics and access requirements.
- Oversee BIM and digital engineering deliverables during pre-construction.
- Support tendering and procurement by reviewing subcontractor proposals, technical submissions and alternative solutions.
- Assist with scopes, specifications and contract documentation.
- Identify value engineering opportunities while maintaining design intent and performance requirements.
- Drive continuous improvement and share technical best practice across the wider team.
About You
We're looking for an experienced Senior Building Services Design Manager / MEP Design Manager with a strong technical background and proven pre-construction experience. You should have:
- Extensive MEPH design management experience within a main contractor, specialist contractor or consultancy environment.
- Strong technical knowledge across mechanical and electrical building services.
- The ability to interrogate and challenge detailed MEP design proposals.
- Strong understanding of thermal modelling, building physics, energy performance and compliance.
- Experience reviewing design documentation, BIM models, specifications and technical submissions.
- Excellent consultant and stakeholder management skills.
- The confidence to challenge technical proposals and influence design outcomes.
- Strong commercial awareness and an ability to identify technical and commercial risks.
- A structured, analytical and proactive approach.
- Professional qualification or membership with a relevant industry body such as CIBSE, IMechE, IET or equivalent.
