An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Estimator to join a well-established Tier 1 Main Contractor based in the heart of Birmingham. As part of the company's continued growth plans, they are looking to strengthen their collaborative estimating team within the wider preconstruction department.
The Assistant Estimator will support the estimating and preconstruction teams in managing commercial activities across a range of construction projects. The successful candidate will assist in preparing accurate and high-quality cost estimates, helping to identify opportunities to enhance value throughout the project lifecycle.
Working closely with senior estimators and the wider project team, the role will involve assisting with trade package pricing, quantity take-offs, cost planning, and the preparation of tender and handover documentation.
Responsibilities- Assist in ensuring all project costs align with the project scope, client requirements, and current legislation.
- Assist in preparing accurate cost plans through the various design stages up to target price.
- Support the design and commercial teams by providing cost advice regarding affordability and value engineering opportunities.
- Help identify project risks and opportunities, providing input on cost-effective solutions.
- Assist with pricing alternative design solutions and preparing information for client review.
- Support the change control process by tracking and pricing design changes through the RIBA stages.
- Complete quantity take-offs to the required level of detail using SMM7/NRM2 where appropriate.
- Assist in compiling cost information packs for project handovers, including comparisons, bills of quantities, quotations, and tender documentation.
- Liaise with supply chain partners and support procurement activities.
- Work collaboratively with operational and design teams to support project delivery objectives.
- Assist in reviewing drawings, specifications, and technical documentation to ensure accurate pricing.
- Support senior estimators with two-stage tender processes and work package pricing.
- Minimum Level 4 qualification in Construction or a related discipline (HNC/NVQ4 or equivalent).
- Degree qualified or currently working towards a construction-related degree desirable.
- Ambition to work towards professional memberships such as MCIOB or RICS.
- Experience using Conquest Estimating System or similar estimating software preferred.
- Knowledge of a variety of construction methods and materials.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills with good attention to detail.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings and technical specifications accurately.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
