Placement Student - Polymer Materials Research & Development Engineer in Wrexham

The Components business sits in the Energy sector and designs, manufactures and supplies state of the art low and medium voltage cable accessories that enable customers' installation requirements. Products we supply hold, join, terminate and protect customers' vital cable assets. This role offers the opportunity to work as part of the UK R&D team in a busy technical engineering environment.

We are seeking an undergraduate to join the Components engineering / technical team based at our Components factory in Wrexham. The successful candidate will join the Resin R&D team who design, test and support a diverse range of resin encapsulation materials used in low and medium voltage cable accessories. This will be a 12-month placement beginning in July. The position will focus on polymer science related to resin type materials used in cable accessories, while providing a broad materials background and an appreciation of cable accessory design, materials and testing as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Typical Tasks

• Undertake and support projects to evaluate new and/or alternative materials to enhance technical performance of existing resin formulations.
• Build knowledge of Prysmian cold pour resin technologies to support current manufacturing processes.
• Work as an integral part of the team to help achieve objectives in terms of new product development in cold curing resin systems for cable joint encapsulation and related products.
• Undertake projects for the development of resin formulations for new applications.
• Prepare and undertake test programmes including benchmarking of Prysmian and competitor products to identify cost reduction opportunities.
• Carry out routine testing of resin formulations to evaluate material properties such as material flow and reactivity behaviour.
• Involvement with in-house type approval testing of resin filled cable joints.
• In aid of your personal development, a PhD-qualified engineer will be assigned as a mentor to provide support and oversee your progress.

Who We Are Looking For

• An undergraduate in chemistry, polymer science or other related subject.
• Good practical skills within a laboratory environment.
• Strong analytical skills to assimilate and review technical data.
• Strong computer skills (MS Office & CAD).

Wrexham site, Oak Road, Wrexham Industrial Estate, Wrexham, LL13 9PH. Free car parking is available next to the site. A full UK driving licence or own transport is advantageous due to the factory location.
