This is a hands-on operational role with a clearly defined development pathway. The successful candidate will be supported to become Site Low Voltage Authorised Person (LVAP), with onward progression to High Voltage Authorised Person (HVAP) in line with our internal authorisation framework and the site’s HV/LV Safety Rules.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 24/7 monitoring of critical M&E plant via BMS
- Respond to alarms, faults, and incidents in a structured and timely manner, following site Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs) and Escalation Procedure
- Maintain accurate shift logs, incident reports, and handover documentation; ensure seamless continuity between shifts
- Conduct routine site walkdowns, plant readings, and condition-based inspections across electrical, mechanical, and life-safety systems
- Ensure data hall environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, airflow, differential pressure) remain within agreed operational parameters
Maintenance
- Carry out Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) on-shift and assist specialist vendors as required
- Perform first-line reactive maintenance and fault diagnosis on UPS, generators, LV switchgear, PDUs/RPPs, CRAC/CRAH units, chillers, pumps, BMS, and fire detection & suppression systems
- Support major maintenance windows and customer-impacting works, executing and drafting Methods of Procedure (MOPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and EOPs
- Identify and report defects, near-misses, and continuous-improvement opportunities
Safety, Permits & Compliance
- Operate the site Permit to Work (PTW) system — issuing, receiving, and supervising permits as authorised
- Apply Lock-Out / Tag-Out (LOTO) isolation procedures rigorously
- Escort and supervise contractors, ensuring full adherence to site safety, security, and operational standards
- Manage fire system isolations and re-instatements
- Champion a “Safety First, Uptime Always” culture across the shift team
Authorised Person Duties (post-appointment)
- Once appointed as Site LVAP, take responsibility for LV switching, isolations, and the issue of LV permits in accordance with the site Safety Rules
- Develop towards HVAP appointment, supporting HV switching schedules, HV isolations, and the broader site authorisation programme
Essential Experience & Qualifications
- Recognised apprenticeship or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Building Services (City & Guilds, NVQ Level 3, HNC, or above)
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a critical environment: data centre, pharmaceutical, hospital, broadcast, financial trading floor, or similar 24/7 mission-critical setting
- Strong working knowledge of M&E systems: UPS, standby generators, LV switchgear, PDUs/RPPs, CRAC/CRAH, chilled water systems, BMS, and fire/life-safety systems
- Demonstrable experience working within a Permit to Work environment and a clear understanding of LOTO/safe isolation principles
- Willingness and ability to work a continental shift pattern, including nights, weekends, and public holidays
- Flexibility to work occasional overtime
- Right to work in the UK
