We are looking for a Consultant Paediatrician to lead and coordinate a specialist community paediatric service for children and families in Mid Essex. The post holder will work with primary care health teams, the acute paediatric team, and key agencies such as Children and Young People’s Services. The successful applicant will join a team of 3 Consultant Community Paediatricians and 1 Specialist Registrar.
Main duties of the job:
- Provide clinical care within the Acute and Community Consultant framework and develop innovative child health promotion.
- Advise on prevention, assessment and diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders and physical neuro‑disabilities.
- Work closely with other Community Paediatricians and with multidisciplinary teams to provide diagnostic services for possible Autism Spectrum Disorder and physical neuro‑disabilities.
- Safeguarding and child protection duties.
- Assess and manage pre‑school and school‑age children with special educational needs under the Education Act.
- Take a non‑clinical lead role complementary to existing team leaders.
- Coordinate with the Care Coordination Centre, triage referrals, and participate in weekly rota.
- Attend departmental operational meetings, Medical Staff Advisory Committee, Local Negotiating Committee, and safeguarding peer review meetings.
Qualifications – Essential criteria:
- MBBS (or equivalent)
- MRCPCH
- Full registration with GMC with licence to practice
- Entry on Specialist Register in Paediatrics or a Doctor in Training within 6 months of CCT at time of interview

- MD/PHD
- MSc in Community Paediatrics
Experience – Essential criteria:
- Broad in‑depth experience of Community Child Health
- Experience working within a multi‑disciplinary team with effective interpersonal skills
- Experience in Child Protection/Safeguarding issues
- Experience in partnership working
- Understanding of the child in the context of culture, family, and society
Experience – Desirable criteria:
- Experience in other areas relevant to child health
- Ability to lead a multi‑disciplinary team
- Experience of assessment of suspected sexual abuse
Training – Essential criteria:
- 2 years or more higher professional training in Community Child Health or Neurodisability
- Knowledge of assessment and management of physical disability
- Knowledge of assessment and management of ASD and ADHD
