Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated individual to join us as a Tobacco Dependency Advisor (TDA), supporting the delivery of the new Emergency Department Stop Smoking Service operating within Norfolk’s three acute hospital Trusts. You will be based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King’s Lynn.
Responsibilities
- Promote the new service in Norfolk Acute Trusts
- Proactively identify and engage with adult patients and visitors attending the three Emergency Departments who smoke and deliver Very Brief Advice (VBA) to encourage engagement with cessation services
- Provide immediate evidence‑based, non‑judgemental advice and support using brief intervention models tailored to the ED setting
- Offer free vape starter kits to support immediate quit attempts, following national harm‑reduction guidance
- Record engagement, quit attempts, and referrals for performance monitoring, service evaluation, and reporting
- Maintain contact with the patient, contacting them within 48 hours of engagement and at least weekly until the 28‑day quit date and up to six weeks
- Work toward monthly KPIs, adapting delivery to achieve outcomes
- Reduce smoking prevalence and smoking‑related health inequalities by providing evidence‑based cessation support to adult smokers attending EDs in Norfolk
- Reduce future ED attendances and hospital admissions linked to smoking‑related conditions
- Increase the number of quit attempts and successful cessation outcomes
- Contribute to improved population health outcomes and reduce NHS burden through early intervention
- Support the Government’s ambition for smokefree communities by 2030
- Embed the cessation offer as part of a whole‑system approach with acute, community, and public health partners
- Manage a caseload of participants identified via the ED Stop Smoking Service independently
- Use motivational interviewing and Making Every Contact Count (MECC) to support sustained behaviour change
- Ensure inclusive engagement with individuals and communities experiencing high burden of smoking‑related harm
- Collaborate with acute trusts, local authority public health teams, and community partners to strengthen local cessation pathways
- Where vaping is inappropriate, establish alternative support in the community and refer patients requiring pharmacotherapy or intensive support to the appropriate service
- Record details of service users, completing documentation per SOPs
- Input patient data onto local system and PharmOutcomes, ensuring accuracy and monitoring audit reports
- Work as part of the wider team with other TDAs, health professionals, and ED smoking champions
- Maintain professional relationships within Norfolk Acute Trusts and other relevant organisations
- Engage in continuous professional development, maintaining up‑to‑date knowledge of evidence‑based practices, techniques, and emerging guidance (including NICE); complete mandatory Trust training and NCSCT modules and pursue ongoing relevant learning
- Manage own daily timetable of delegated tasks, including time for supervision and training
- Carry out administrative duties as required
- Attend educational events and ED departmental meetings
- Promote the service within the ED
Qualifications – Essential
- NCSCT Practitioner – trained or willing to undertake
- NVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care
- Car owner/driver
- Experience in managing caseloads
- Experience of working in a healthcare environment
Qualifications – Desirable
- Familiarity with IT systems (Word, Excel, Outlook, PharmOutcomes)
Professional UK clinical registration
If the role requires UK professional clinical registration, Provide will pay for registration during the first year of employment.
