Are you an experienced education professional ready to take the next step into leadership? We are seeking a motivated and dynamic Assistant Manager – Education to support the delivery of high‑quality learning and skills provision within a prison environment.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in improving educational outcomes, supporting rehabilitation, and helping learners develop the skills and confidence needed for successful futures. Working closely with the Education Manager and wider leadership team, you will help drive performance, support staff development, and ensure excellence across curriculum delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Operational Management
- Support the Education Manager with the day-to-day operation of the education department.
- Lead curriculum delivery, learner management, and departmental performance.
- Deputise for the Education Manager as required.
- Oversee learner induction, allocation and conduct within education settings.
- Develop effective partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to enhance learner outcomes.
- Support delivery across a range of curriculum areas, including Motor Mechanics, Art, Personal Development, Music, Media and PSD.
Curriculum & Performance
- Drive improvements in learner recruitment, retention, achievement and satisfaction.
- Set and monitor staff performance targets aligned to KPIs and contractual requirements.
- Support the development of a standardised, high-quality curriculum that meets learner and employer needs.
- Work closely with awarding organisations to maintain quality and compliance standards.
Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement
- Lead quality assurance activities within designated curriculum areas.
- Manage IQA and EQA processes, observations, learning walks and deep dives.
- Contribute to the Self-Assessment Report (SAR), Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) and departmental planning.
- Analyse performance data to identify trends, monitor progress and drive improvement.
- Coach and support staff to enhance teaching, learning and assessment practices.
People Management & Development
- Manage and support teaching and support staff through appraisal, probation and performance reviews.
- Induct and mentor new team members, fostering a positive and high-performing culture.
- Coordinate continuing professional development opportunities based on quality reviews and organisational priorities.
- Support recruitment and selection activities to ensure effective staffing levels.
Compliance & Delivery
- Ensure all delivery meets Ofsted, Ministry of Justice and organisational standards.
- Promote safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion.
- Maintain compliance with all prison security procedures and requirements.
- Deliver teaching sessions where required.
- Support wider operational needs, including classroom cover when necessary.
About You
Essential Requirements
- Teaching qualification at Level 5 or above.
- English and Maths qualification at Level 3 or above.
- Internal Quality Assurance qualification, or willingness to work towards achieving it.
- Significant teaching experience within education or training environments.
- Experience of managing staff, curriculum delivery and performance improvement.
- Strong leadership, communication and organisational skills.
- Good understanding of the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF).
- A genuine commitment to using education as a tool for rehabilitation and positive change.
Desirable Requirements
- Level 5 Operations/Departmental Manager qualification.
- Experience working within prison education or adult learning environments.
