We are seeking an inspiring Functional Skills English Tutor to deliver Functional Skills English qualifications from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2 within a prison education environment. This is a rewarding opportunity to support learners in developing the skills, confidence and qualifications needed to progress into employment, further learning and positive futures.
The Role
As a Functional Skills English Tutor, you will deliver engaging, inclusive and learner-focused lessons to groups of adult learners with varying educational backgrounds, abilities and support needs.
You will create a positive learning environment that encourages participation, achievement and personal growth, helping learners overcome barriers to education and reach their full potential.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver Functional Skills English from Entry Level 1 to Level 2.
- Conduct initial assessments and identify learner starting points.
- Develop and maintain Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
- Plan and deliver engaging lessons tailored to individual learner needs.
- Monitor learner progress and provide constructive feedback.
- Prepare learners for examinations and assessments.
- Support learners who require additional learning support or reasonable adjustments.
- Promote literacy, confidence and independent learning.
- Maintain accurate learner records and documentation.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to support positive learner outcomes.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
Essential Requirements
- Level 3 qualification in English or equivalent.
- Teaching qualification at Level 5 or above (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS or equivalent)
- Experience delivering Functional Skills English qualifications.
- Strong lesson planning and learner engagement skills.
- Excellent communication, organisational and administrative abilities.
- Ability to adapt teaching approaches to suit a range of learning styles and abilities.
- Commitment to safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion.
Desirable
- Experience within prison education, adult learning or further education.
- Experience using BKSB or similar diagnostic assessment tools.
- Knowledge of education quality standards and inspection frameworks.
- Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) qualification or willingness to work towards one.
